Podiatry or podiatric medicine is that health profession that care for, treats, prevents and looks after the foot. In the USA, Podiatrists or podiatric physicians do a 4yr postgraduate podiatry degree and then 2-3 years of residency to become full qualified. They treat anything from a minor corn and ingrown toenail to complicated rearfoot fractures that need surgery. In the UK and Australia, podiatrists complete a 3-4 year undergraduate degree and then are licensed to practice, but at this stage they do not do surgery. They then enrol in a postgraduate surgical program to become surgically qualified. Podiatry’s scope of practice varies quite substantially from country to country and so do the educational requirements.
